Katherine Neighbors, Nurse Practitioner
Katherine Neighbors (she/her/hers) is a Nurse Practitioner with Burkhart Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology. After growing up in Lenoir, located in the foothills of western NC, Katherine attended UNC-Chapel Hill. After graduating with a double major in Political Studies and American Studies, she continued her education at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
After working as a pediatric nurse for 18 years, in various settings such as Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Post-Operative care, Pediatric Emergency, Outpatient Specialty care and Children’s Urgent Care, Katherine graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with her Master of Science in Nursing and is thankful that her nursing path has led her to Burkhart Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology!
Even though these pediatric settings all had a unique role in the healthcare system, they shared a common goal. In each of these arenas, Katherine provided nursing care to families and their infants, children and adolescents and, in return, they taught her so many rewarding lessons and opportunities. Incorporating evidence-based practice through a nursing lens while focusing on the individual needs of families is a delicate balance that she strives to achieve.
Some notable awards that Katherine has received over her career are the UNC Children’s Outpatient Nurse of the Year (2015), North Carolina Great 100 Nurses (2019), and UNC Urgent Care Team Member of the Year (2022).
As a Nurse Practitioner, Katherine enjoys helping her patients feel comfortable in their skin. She accomplishes this by establishing a trusting provider-patient-family relationship with them, listening to each concern, and discussing treatment options based on evidence-based practice. Katherine also enjoys hearing and learning families’ expectations of treatment because that helps her provide individualized care to reach their goal and maximize positive outcomes.
All in all, Katherine is extremely thankful for a nursing career that has given her a wide range of pediatric experience. Katherine learns and grows from every patient interaction as she continues to deliver exceptional care to the patients and families who seek dermatological subspecialty care. Each day, she strives to match diagnoses with a solution that works for each individual patient.

Outside the Office
Outside of work, Katherine enjoys spending time with her husband, Josh, and their 2 children, Henry and Julia. If they are not cheering on their kids at a baseball field, soccer field, or dance studio, then they are cheering on the Tar Heels. They also love taking advantage of fun adventures here in the triangle and beyond, especially in the North Carolina mountains. Katherine also finds joy in exercising, reading books, and making memories with family and friends. She is also very active in her kids’ schools, sports teams, and breast cancer support groups – volunteering whenever possible.

“All of my family loves Dr. Burkhart. I have several children and have been to many dermatologists. He is the best and all my kids go to him now. I wish I was able to be his patient too, but he only sees children.”
